In the opener of last Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader against visiting Cecil Community College, the College of Southern Maryland softball team appeared headed for certain defeat trailing 3-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
CSM (5-3 overall, 3-1 in the MD JUCO) had yielded a pair of insurance runs to Cecil in the top of the seventh and had managed only two hits against Seahawks’ hurler Taylor Stapleford through six scoreless frames.
But in the bottom of the seventh, the host Hawks finally had an answer and freshman Brooke Colliflower delivered with a two-out grand slam for an improbable 4-3 victory.
Colliflower, one of four CSM freshmen who were members of the Chopticon High School 3A state championship team last spring, opened the game by striking out on a high riseball from Stapleford, who collected 12 strikeouts on the day in a losing cause. But Colliflower atoned in a major way in the bottom of the seventh with her team facing a 3-0 deficit.
Freshman Emily Shuff opened the seventh with a bloop single into shallow left then Hannah Leszczynski worked Stapleford for a one-out walk and Leanne Fenwick followed with a single to right to load the bases.
After pinch-hitter Emilia Enfinger struck out, Colliflower followed by sending a 1-1 Stapleford offering over the fence in straightaway center for a walk-off grand slam.
“When I hit it, I wasn’t sure that I got all of it,” Colliflower said. “I watched their center fielder and saw the ball keep carrying and then it landed over the fence. It was so exciting. We’ve had a couple of dramatic comeback victories already this season.”
CSM hurler Miranda Twigg earned the win courtesy of Colliflower’s dramatic homer, limiting the Seahawks to three runs, two earned, in seven complete innings of work. Twigg had blanked the Hawks through five frames before Cecil broke the scoreless deadlock by getting an unearned run in the top of the sixth before adding two clean runs in the top of the seventh.
“That’s one thing about this group of girls, they never quit,” CSM softball coach Keith Sanderson said. “We’ve had a couple of these types of wins. Miranda has been the workhorse in the circle for us this year. She pitched really well again today.”
Cecil (4-2, 4-2) prevailed 7-1 in the second game of the twinbill on Saturday as Taja Souza limited the Hawks to one run on eight hits. Colliflower drove in the only run for CSM in the nightcap, but she took the loss in the circle allowing six runs in six complete innings.
CSM led 1-0 after three, but Cecil responded with three runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and added single runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the split.
