Miscommunication leads to liquor license violation for Waldorf restaurant

“[I] hate to set a precedent that would set the board back,” Jones said during the meeting on Thursday.

The original application for Creeks Sports Bar and Restaurant to keep the sports bar open while Boston’s Gourmet Pizza transferred the liquor license was sent on April 7, Sue Greer, attorney representing the sports bar, said.

However, it was not reviewed or approved even after a conversation with the county attorney’s office about the transfer application and hearing date, causing the restaurant to be in violation of the license.

“I thought we followed the rules,” Greer said. “There was a miscommunication.”

After the closed session, the liquor board approved to close Creeks Sports Bar and Restaurant for more than 10 consecutive days for renovations to create separation between Creeks Sports Bar and Restaurant and another restaurant, Flavor Hive, and to extend the validity of Boston’s Gourmet Pizza’s license for 30 days until June 11.

“The rules are there to be followed,” Jones said. “And they weren’t really followed very well on this one.”

Emails were sent between Greer and the county attorney’s office on April 21 and 23, seeking the application to be placed on the board’s May agenda, Greer said. An email was sent on May 6 from the county attorney’s office that said the restaurant should not be selling alcohol.

Greer then asked the county attorney’s office to have the liquor board approve the request to sell alcohol.

However, the board never received the email, Jones said.

“We want to promote new business,” she said. “We don’t want to put anyone’s job in jeopardy or turn down any tax revenue. … I’m unhappy as a board member that it went down like this.”
