After months of facing one another in various indoor meets at the same venue involving multiple Southern Maryland Athletic Conference schools, female athletes from local squads who earned a spot in their respective state championships on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex delivered several noteworthy performances and three of them earned state titles.
On Tuesday afternoon in the 1A state championships at the Sportsplex, Patuxent High School senior Aiyana Smalley put the finishing touches on her stellar indoor season by capturing the girls state title in the high jump (5-07), finished third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.79) and was part of the 800 relay (1:51.75) that placed fourth overall.
“My main goal all season was to win the high jump,” Smalley said. “That’s four for me in my four years. It wasn’t a personal best overall, but it was my best for indoors. I thought I ran well in the hurdles. Aalyric [Keemer] ran a great race in the hurdles and she’s just a freshman.”
Then on Wednesday afternoon, Lackey junior Evagellia Lilly Okwuosa captured the girls’ 2A state title in the 55 hurdles (8.48) then was fourth in the 55 dash (7.35). Okwuosa savored the moment after capturing the 55 hurdles and looked forward to similar success in the upcoming outdoor season when she will be markedly busier.
“I was so happy to win the 55 hurdles title because I had family here watching me today,” Okwuosa said. “This was a great way to end my indoor season. I am really looking forward to outdoor this spring. In addition to the dash and the hurdles, I intend to also compete in the long jump and the triple jump.”
Northern senior Kayla Scott earned the 3A state title in the girls shot put (34-11.50), edging Chopticon senior Allison Sonon (34-10.25) by just over an inch for the crown.
Huntingtown junior Kaitlyn Tempera finished second in the 2A girls’ 55 dash (7.31) as the top seed. Northern junior Caitlin Mullaney placed fourth in the 3A girls’ 500 (1:19.50), Calvert freshman Leah Rannacher took fifth in the 2A girls’ 300 (41.77), while Chopticon senior Kate George finished seventh in the 3A girls’ 3,200 (11:49.36)
Likewise, Smalley’s freshman teammate Aalyric Keemer also enjoyed a solid showing in her first state meet. Keemer edged Smalley for second place in the 55 hurdles (8.76) and was also part of the 800 relay that took fourth.
Patuxent senior Sanise Jefferson was sixth in the shot put (31-00.75), while junior Taylor Cole placed seventh in the 800 (2:37.24) and was eighth in the 1,600 (5:58.21).
