Man charged with rape
On Nov. 18 at around 12:05 a.m., officers from the Charles sheriff’s office responded to the area of Vinos Liquors on Drury Drive in La Plata for a report of a rape.
On Nov. 17 at around 11:30 p.m., Corey Lateis Chase, 55, of Waldorf, who is also listed to have an address in Newburg, returned intoxicated to a tent the couple lived in that is located in a nearby woods and “aggressively” accused his partner of cheating on him, according to charging documents.
While accusing his partner, Chase pulled back a folding knife and stabbed the couple’s air mattress, documents said. Chase then allegedly pressed the knife against his partner’s cheek, causing a laceration.
While the accuser tried to leave, Chase allegedly grabbed them by the back of the neck and threw them onto the ground, according to the documents, which redacted the alleged victim’s gender.
Chase allegedly pulled down the accuser’s pants and underwear and “forcibly” had sex with the person, according to the charging documents. Chase allegedly choked them causing “significant pain” to their throat and neck.
The accuser asked Chase to stop and he allegedly replied, “Nobody is going to believe it’s me,” documents said.
Officers located Chase standing on the corner of Heritage Green Parkway and Lelia Court. Officers allegedly found the knife used during the incident.
Chase was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and charged with first-degree rape, felony first-degree assault and false imprisonment.
Student charged with assault
On Nov. 19, a school resource officer at Maurice McDonough High School responded to an incident in a classroom.
An investigation revealed that a student, 15, intentionally struck a teacher in the back of the head with a laptop as class was being dismissed, a release from the Charles sheriff’s office said. The incident occurred after the teacher questioned the student about his absence from class.
The teacher received treatment from the school nurse. The school resource officer continued the investigation and on Nov. 25, in accordance with Maryland law, the student was charged as a juvenile with assault and also faces consequences from Charles public schools under the student code of conduct.
Man charged with narcotic possession
On Nov. 19 at around 1:20 a.m., Charles sheriff’s officers made contact with the manager and security guard of the Super 8 Motel on Crain Highway in Waldorf to remove Calvin Chris Cherry, 43, of Brandywine from the property.
Cherry was previously kicked out of the motel by staff and was getting ready to exit the rear door, charging documents said. Officers went to the door and Cherry exited it. As they went to identify Cherry, he allegedly pushed away from officers and threw a green object into the parking lot.
The object was a plastic medicine bottle, which had a plastic bag with suspected cocaine, documents said. During a search, officers allegedly found $620 and a clear glass vial filled with suspected phencyclidine inside Cherry’s pockets.
Cherry was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and charged with the active arrest warrant to a previous theft and charged with the possession of and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Man charged with assault
On Nov. 24, officers with the La Plata Police Department responded to an apartment in La Plata for a report of an assault in progress.
A woman said she was on Bingo Live in the bedroom when Anthony Dionte Waldron, 37, of La Plata thought she was flirting with the man on the app, charging documents said. Waldron allegedly grabbed her by her head wrap and threw her onto the ground.
Waldron allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat and began to choke her, documents said. The woman had visible red marks around her neck, according to police.
The woman was able to get up off the ground and threw Waldron’s belongings in the hallway, documents said. The woman stated that she and Waldron have been in a “complicated relationship.”
Waldron was charged with felony first-degree assault and second-degree assault.
Reward offered in shooting case
Charles County Crime Solvers is offering a cash reward in reference to a reckless endangerment case that occurred on Nov. 30 at 8:15 p.m. in which unknown suspect(s) fired several rounds from a handgun into an apartment in the 3000 block of Gallery Place in Waldorf. None of the occupants inside were injured.

California man charged with assault, gun violations
On Nov. 24, Deputy James Morgan of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house on Patuxent Beach Road in California for a report of an assault. An injured man found at the residence said he was jumped by two armed men.
Morgan stated in court papers the man sustained head trauma and was flown to a hospital. Later, investigators interviewed the man at the hospital.
He identified one of his assailants as Shamal U. Weems, 49, of California. The attack, said Weems’ accuser, followed accusations that the man had been “stealing cocaine.”
Morgan said a search of the residence led to the locating of 9 mm Polymer 80 unserialized handgun.
Weems was identified by motor vehicle administration records. It was learned through the investigation that Weems is prohibited by law from possessing a gun.
Weems was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, firearm use in a violent crime and illegal possession of a firearm.
Weems is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges is scheduled for Dec. 23.
Woman charged as fugitive from Alabama
On Nov. 28, Cpl. Tyler Westphal of the St. Mary’s sheriff’s office arrested Patricia L. Butler, 47, on charges she is a fugitive from justice and wanted in Alabama. Different court records identify Butler as a resident of Lexington Park and Pensacola, Fla.
According to court documents, Butler is wanted in Escombia, Ala., where she was convicted of a crime and is alleged to have broken the terms of probation.
On Monday in district court, Butler voluntarily waived extradition. She was ordered to be held without bond.
A district court hearing on Butler’s fugitive charge is scheduled for Dec. 23.
Great Mills man charged with assaulting women
On Nov. 25, Trooper Shyann Phelps of the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barracks responded to an assault in progress.
Phelps stated in court documents that a man identified as Jason Steven Brooks, 28, of Great Mills is alleged to have assaulted a 60-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman.
The older woman alleged she was assaulted while trying to intervene in the reported assault of the younger woman.
Phelps contacted another woman who claimed to have witnessed Brooks’ assault of the younger woman. The woman claimed she saw the defendant pull the woman’s hair, punch her face, kick her and attempt to push her into oncoming traffic. He was also heard to make threats to the woman.
According to court documents, Brooks was interviewed by Phelps and another trooper, denying the allegations.
On Nov. 27, Brooks was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count of disorderly conduct.
A court summons was issued for Brooks. A district court hearing on the charges is scheduled for Jan. 9.
Prince Frederick man charged with felony theft
On Nov. 22, charges were filed in district court against a 43-year-old Prince Frederick man, who was developed as a suspect in the Oct. 29 theft of a laptop computer from a parked vehicle.
According to charging documents filed by Deputy Kyle Grabill of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, the theft was reported Oct. 30 by a Chesapeake Beach man who had parked his vehicle on Hospital Road in Prince Frederick the previous day.
The swiped computer had an estimated value of $2,274, Grabill said.
Grabill said he reviewed surveillance camera footage from a hospital building near the parking lot. Someone who arrived in another vehicle was observed entering the accuser’s parked vehicle.
The vehicle transporting the alleged perpetrator had attached to it a decal with a business phone number on it. Video taken from a second location provided the deputy with a chance to get a clear reading of the decal, which subsequently led to the identity of an alleged perpetrator. The defendant was identified in court documents as Jeremy Curtis Sessoms.
A court summons has been issued for Sessoms, charging him with felony theft plus rogue and vagabond. A district court hearing on the charges is scheduled for Jan. 5.
Beach man faces assault, disorderly charges
On Nov. 23, Deputy Cameron Chase of the Calvert sheriff’s office responded to a Chesapeake Beach residence where a woman was allegedly assaulted.
According to court papers, several witnesses told Chase they saw the defendant, identified as Randall Lee Cooper Sr., 75, of Chesapeake Beach, approach the woman with two steak knives and threaten her.
Cooper was arrested and charged with one count each of first-degree assault and second-degree assault, plus six counts of disorderly conduct.
After three bond reviews, Cooper remains in jail on a no-bond status.
A competency hearing for Cooper is scheduled for Dec. 3. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
Huntingtown man charged with assaults
On Nov. 26, Trooper J. Crockett of the Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack responded to a 911 call reporting a man allegedly assaulted two people at a Huntingtown residence.
The defendant, identified in court documents as Ryan Anthony Bylan, 43, of Huntingtown, was at the residence when the trooper arrived. Crockett wrote in charging papers that Bylan appeared to be intoxicated. Bylan allegedly attempted to strangle a woman at the house.
Bylan was charged with two counts of second-degree assault.
After initially being held without bond, on Monday Bylan was released on his own recognizance after a court review.
A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for Jan. 8.
Woman charged with taking a vehicle
On Nov. 27, charges were filed in district court against a 30-year-old North Beach woman accused of unlawfully taking a Toyota Corolla from a Chesapeake Beach residence without the owner’s consent.
The incident is being investigated by Trooper M. Bennett of the state police barrack in Prince Frederick.
According to court papers, the accused is identified as Julia Lynn Bennett.
Trooper Bennett reported the vehicle was subsequently located.
Julia Bennett is charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle — a felony charge — and unauthorized removal of a motor vehicle.
A court summons was issued for Julia Bennett on Nov. 27. A district court hearing on the case is scheduled for Jan. 5.
Unsolved theft probed
On Nov. 14, Cpl. Tristan Plant of the Calvert sheriff’s office responded to a residence on Long Cove Lane in Port Republic for a reported theft. The complainant said someone stole carpet/flooring tools that were stored under the home’s deck. The estimated value of stolen property is $5,000.
