Virginia man dies in car crash in Waldorf

A preliminary investigation revealed a gray Honda SUV had exited a carwash and was in the far-right acceleration lane when the driver of a white Genesis SUV, "reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed," allegedly struck the Honda in the rear, a release from the sheriff's office said. The collision caused both vehicles to spin into the median.

The front seat passenger in the Honda, identified as Godfrey Derlonard Scarlett, 68, of Virginia, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The driver of the Honda, a 63-year-old female from Waldorf, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Genesis SUV, a 50-year-old male from Waldorf, was transported by an ambulance to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to police. Police did not immediately identify the Genesis driver.
