When the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team welcomed Bryn Athyn College for the United East Conference Championship game last Saturday afternoon, the Seahawks’ senior-laden starting lineup seemed destined to coast to its fourth straight UEC tournament title.
St. Mary’s College (10-7) had defeated Bryn Athyn 19-6 two weeks earlier when the Lions hosted the regular season clash between the two squads and the Seahawks had since trounced Cedar Crest by the exact score of 29-0 for the second time one week later.
Despite an uncharacteristic slow start, which included the opening goal from the visitors, St. Mary’s righted the ship immediately and cruised to a 24-5 victory.
After earning its fourth consecutive UEC tournament title, the Seahawks women will next play Haverford College (14-5) this Saturday at noon at Salisbury University in a NCAA Division III opening round game.
St. Mary’s College seniors Hailey Betch, Colin Horton and Madison Laine have been the cornerstones of the program for four seasons and have known nothing but success. On Saturday afternoon the trio combined for eight goals and each scored at least twice when the Seahawks countered an opening goal by Bryn Athyn’s Kylie Scarpiello with 16 unanswered.
“I don’t think we could have gone to any other four-year college and enjoyed this kind of success,” Horton said in the postgame media session. “What we’ve been able to do here has been almost surreal. I think it’s been great. We’re hoping to be able to continue the success we’ve had in the NCAA [Division III] tournament.”
While the seniors have been the core of the Seahawks’ success the past four seasons, junior Katelin Scala tallied four goals and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player on Saturday. Scala has enjoyed the chance to serve as a solid supporting member of the Seahawks’ senior-laden group and admitted the MVP selection caught her by surprised.
“I was shocked when they announced my name [as MVP],” Scala said. “I thought so many of the girls played really well. It’s been a great three years playing with these other girls. They’ve meant so much to the program and it’s been great learning and watching them. I’m definitely going to miss them.”
In addition to Scala, Sanne Elling also had four goals, Ella Baynes, Betch and Laine tallied three goals each and Hope Harrison, who scored the Seahawks’ first goal on Saturday, Horton and Kayleigh Dragon each added a pair of goals while freshman Sophia Kent had the other goal.
Bryn Athyn (8-5), which arrived courtesy of a last-second goal in a 10-9 win over Wilson College in the UEC semifinals, got one goal each from Scarpiello, Sabrina Brock, Xola Wade, Kira Bradley and Paige Lipp.
