Now that 2026 legislative session Sine Die (without a day) has come and gone, I have received well intentioned communications from several members of the District 28 delegation, touting the “successes” of the recently completed 90-day General Assembly session.
The legislative session seems brutal on purpose. The politicians slow walk everything for the first 65 days, then slam through their crazy "priorities" in the final 25 days.
As evidenced by bills submitted, the legislators in Maryland seemed more interested in responding to national political issues rather than taking care of their constituents.
This session we saw: law enforcement neutralized; tampons in men's bathrooms; insurance mandates; and the largest budget in Maryland's history ($71 billion, which is funded by last year’s largest tax increase in Maryland’s history).
We did not see any action on: energy bill relief; tax relief; lowered car registrations, license fees and tolls; creating economic opportunities; or school choice.
Most of the votes on bills followed party lines. It’s incredulous that our elected officials, who all represent their constituents (Maryland citizens and non-citizens), cannot think for themselves and blindly vote their “party position” by bowing to the directives of the party leaders.
Gone are the days when Republicans and Democrats would join forces for the good of the state.
Shame on our elected officials. Remember them come elections in several months.
