Presentation on dementia scheduled
The Calvert County Office on Aging and Hospice of the Chesapeake will host a presentation on dementia Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burnett Hospice House in Prince Frederick. Dementia Live provides a free and powerful tool for family caregivers. Caregivers will learn about the challenges faced by those living with dementia and receive practical tips to improve communication and connection.

Swim day planned for this weekend
The Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a free community swim day Nov. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center in Prince Frederick. Admission to the pool at 130 Auto Dr. in Prince Frederick is free to both adults and children. Swim clinics, water fitness classes, games and activities will be available free of charge. Grant application process opens
The Calvert County Department of Community Resources announces the opening of the Calvert County Opioid Restitution Fund grant application process. The fund supports local initiatives that address the opioid crisis through prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery and public safety strategies. Funding for this program is made possible through statewide opioid restitution settlements and is available to support Calvert government entities, nonprofit organizations and community-based partners. Projects must demonstrate measurable impact in reducing opioid-related harm and align with one or more of the five strategic priorities: prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery and public safety.

Time to register for winter sports
The Calvert Department of Parks and Recreation announces winter sports registration is now open to county residents. Adult basketball is open to players ages 18 and older, excluding high school students. Participants must be 18 by this Dec. 31. Registration is team-based, with a fee of $800 per team. Registrants are responsible for forming their own teams of 10-15 players. Games are played at Northeast Community Center, located at 4075 Gordon Stinnett Avenue in Chesapeake Beach, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-10 p.m., beginning Jan. 6. The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 19. To register and obtain a roster form, email sports@calvertcountymd.gov.
Youth basketball registration is open to children ages 9-17 now through Nov. 14 or until divisions are full. The registration fee is $100 for the first child, with a $6 discount for each additional family member. Volunteer coaches for youth basketball are also needed in all divisions. Interested applicants are invited to email sports@calvertcountymd.gov for a coaching application. Rookie basketball registration is open to children in kindergarten through third grade to learn fundamental basketball skills. The program meets once weekly for eight weeks beginning Jan. 3. The cost is $66 for children ages 5-6 and $76 for children ages 7-8. The deadline to register is Dec. 19 or until divisions are full.

Shreds set for November and December
Calvert’s Division of Solid Waste sponsors free paper shredding events for county residents and businesses to shred confidential or sensitive documents. The next two shredding events will be held Nov. 15 at Huntingrown High and Dec. 20 at Appeal Landfill in Lusby. Both events will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Businesses are allowed up to five banker boxes of paper per business. There is no limit for residents. Fund application process underway
The Calvert County Department of Community Resources announces the opening of the Community Reinvestment and Repair Fund grant application process. The fund supports local initiatives that strengthen neighborhoods, promote equity and enhance quality of life for residents across Calvert County.
A total of $640,000 in funding is available in fiscal 2026. Eligible agencies may request a minimum of $2,500, with operational and capital grants of up to $50,000. Certain conditions apply. Carryover requests are permitted for capital grants for an additional one-year extension if submitted in writing.

Applications now accepted for PAR program
The Calvert County Commissioners and the Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board announce the application period for the county’s purchase and retirement fund program is now open through Nov. 10. The program is part of Calvert’s longstanding effort to preserve agricultural land. Through the program, transferable development rights are purchased, retired and permanently removed from the market to protect farmland from development.

Park opens new orienteering course
The Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the unveiling of a new orienteering course at Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park in Dunkirk. The course was designed by Eagle Scout Seamus Casada of Troop 789. An orienteering course is a mapped route that guides participants through a series of checkpoints called controls, which participants must find using a map and compass. It is a sport that combines navigation, physical activity and decision-making. The goal is to complete the course by visiting all controls in the correct order, typically in the shortest time.

Road resurfacing underway
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has begun the resurfacing of northbound Route 2/4 from Ponds Wood Road to the Route 2 intersection in northern Calvert County. Crews will work overnight, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, until early November. During work hours, motorists can expect single lane closures, though work hours are subject to change. Motorists are advised to plan extra driving time during the highway improvement project. All work is weather permitting. Sheriff’s office certification process in progress
A site-based assessor from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. is currently reviewing all aspects of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. As part of the assessment process, both agency personnel and community members are invited to provide comments regarding the agency’s performance. Comments may be submitted online through the CALEA Public Access Portal at https://cimrs2.calea.org/. Zoom discontinued in Calvert
The Calvert County commissioners have announced public access to county government public meetings through Zoom will be discontinued. Meeting access will continue to be available through Microsoft Teams, by phone and in person. Public meetings will remain accessible virtually by Teams, in person and by phone for public comment. Meetings are also available to view live on Comcast channels 99 and 1070 and on YouTube. This change is a cost savings for Calvert government and will streamline platforms while still allowing accessible public engagement options.
Center renovations are underway
The Calvert County Department of Community Resources, Office on Aging, announced renovations to the Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick are underway. The center is scheduled to remain open during the renovation process, which is anticipated to take six months. Congregate and home-delivered meals are scheduled to continue as normal. Some classes and programs may be impacted.

North Beach Healthy Homes
The North Beach Healthy Homes Program is a grant-funded initiative by the Maryland Energy Administration to help Calvert County residents, especially seniors and low-to-moderate income households, make their homes more energy-efficient. Launched as part of North Beach’s Sustainable Community designation since 2012, the program aims to reduce utility bills and carbon footprints through weatherization and energy-saving upgrades. Owner-occupied homes in Calvert County, with priority for North Beach residents, seniors and veterans are eligible. Income qualifications are based on the total annual income of homeowners and household size. Example, a household of four with combined owner income under $97,800 qualifies. New fishing pier hours announced
The Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation announces new hours at the Solomons Fishing Pier. Starting this month, the pier will now be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In 2026, the operating hours will be 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The pier was previously open to the public 24 hours a day.
An access gate will be installed to the entrance of the fishing pier, and additional signage for rules, regulations and new hours will be posted at the property.
The public is reminded that the Solomons Boat Ramp parking lot is for those utilizing the boat ramp or for the fishing pier only. There is no fee to use the fishing pier.

Help the town of Chesapeake Beach, Calvert County and Maryland agencies monitor flooding by downloading the MyCoast App — visit mycoast.org for more information. The MyCoast App makes tracking flooding events easy by automatically linking the daily tide schedules and weather events to your image. Once you create an account you will be able to ad images to Chesapeake Beach’s reports and view others’ reports of flooding in the area. The town will analyze this data along with partnering agencies to make informed management.
