Crews from several companies battled a barn fire in Chaptico late Tuesday night. The blaze claimed the life of a 62-year-old man.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, late Tuesday evening crews from several departments were dispatched to a barn fire on Roosevelt Boulevard in Chaptico.
A release from the state agency said, “911 callers advised that a barn was on fire and a person was trapped inside.”
The 50-by-100 foot structure was found fully engulfed in fire.
An unidentified woman who tried to reach a man reportedly trapped in the barn sustained burns to her hands and was transported to Washington Hospital Center for treatment.
“Family members on scene conformed that one individual was still inside the structure,” the fire marshal’s office reported. “After the fire was brought under control, firefighters located a deceased male victim within the barn.”
The man, whose name has not been released by investigators, has been preliminarily identified as the 62-year-old homeowner.
According to Maryland land records, the property is owned by Robert and Arlene Brown.
Investigators reported the man “had gone into the barn to attempt to jump-start a vehicle.” While working on the vehicle, the man contacted the woman, asking her to bring a fire extinguisher.
“When she went outside, the fire had quickly spread throughout the barn,” the fire marshal’s office release stated.
The male victim was taken to the chief medical examiner’s office where positive identification and the cause of death will be determined.
In addition to the fire marshal’s office, troopers from the Maryland State Police are involved in the active investigation.
