Female runners from across the state competed in the 2A Girls Cross Country Championships at Hereford High School last Saturday afternoon. Huntingtown senior Sophie Bryan placed fourth in that event, two spots ahead of Calvert senior Madison McCurry.

Following three months of competing primarily against one another on flat courses throughout the area, Southern Maryland Athletic Conference cross country runners ventured to the firm but very hilly terrain at Hereford High School last Saturday where several of them navigated the course well.
Huntingtown High School senior Sophie Bryan and Calvert High senior Madison McCurry had finished first and second, respectively, in the SMAC Girls Cross Country Championships at Jefferson Patterson Park in October, so it only seemed fitting that they had the best showing on Saturday.
Bryan finished fourth in the 2A state girls event by completing the course in 19 minutes, 37.18 seconds, while McCurry (20:12.60) took sixth in that event. Patuxent senior Davan Humphreys, sidelined through much of the season with an injury, finished 19th (21:08.82) in that event.
Northern High School senior Gentry Bowie, who missed the SMAC championship meet due to an illness, finished 16th (19:49.54) in the girls 3A meet, ten spots better than junior teammate Avhlee Reist (20:28.04). Chopticon sophomore Kate George placed 34th (20:50.87), while Great Mills senior Sadie Swift finished 39th (21:17.74).
Southern Maryland Athletic Conference boys champion and Great Mills senior Braden Gutekunst placed 23rd (16:47.13), one spot better than Chopticon junior Mason Allen (16:47.32) in the 3A boys state meet.
In the 2A boys meet, Huntingtown teammates Brendan Bischof and Caleb Mazzella placed 14th (17:05.43) and 19th (17:37.37), respectively, while La Plata sophomores Lucas Alarie (17:06.33) and Trevor Thompson (17:13.43) were 15th and 20th.
In the girls 4A meet, Leonardtown senior Leah Magda placed 22nd (20:25.58), while junior teammate Morgan Scrom took 31st (20:56.03).
Two of their male teammates also enjoyed similar success in the 4A boys meet as Leonardtown senior Kody Clarke took 19th (16:49.21), while fellow Raiders’ senior Kirby Foster was 27th (17:01.54).
