While several of the athletes who convened inside the school gymnasium last Wednesday afternoon at Huntingtown High School for National Signing Day have already completed their scholastic endeavors, several others signed amid some genuinely unfinished business this winter and spring.
In all, a total of seven Huntingtown student-athletes signed their NLI amid coaches, family, friends and teammates while introduced to the gathering by school athletic director Vashawne Gross.
Four male athletes, Blake Ashley, Will Buckler, Evan Powell and Trevor Robbins and three females, Jordyn Greever, Olivia Kendick and Julianna Powell all signed last Wednesday.
Ashley and Buckler, both members of the school’s wrestling team this winter, signed with Roanoke College and Frostburg University, respectively, while Powell is headed to West Virginia University for football and Robbins will continue his baseball career at Immaculata University after completing his final season with the Hurricanes this spring.
“The coaches reached out to me last April and I went on an official visit,” Powell said of his commitment to West Virginia where he plans to major in sports management. “I committed to them back in June. I really enjoyed my experience playing here. We reached the state finals the last two years. We didn’t win, but it was still great being able to play in those games at Navy.”
Both Greever, who is headed to Frostburg, and Kendrick, who signed with Marymount University, still have one more season remaining with the Hurricanes’ softball team this spring. Last season Huntingtown reached the 2A state Championship game only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat, but Greever and Powell both vowed a better conclusion this spring.
“I’m excited about the season,” Greever said. “I can’t wait. We have a great group of girls back and we have some freshmen coming in that should help. I was a little nervous today for some reason. But I was glad that everyone was here, including some of my Fury teammates.”
“Today really meant a lot to me,” Kendrick said of signing day. “My whole family could be here along with some of my friends and teammates. I’m just hoping to be able to play an entire season injury free. I think we’ll have a really good team again. A lot of girls are back and Jordyn [Greever] is amazing.”
Powell, who will play girls’ lacrosse for the Hurricanes this spring, signed with North Greenville University for women’s lacrosse next season. Like Kendrick, Powell is hoping the team will enjoy plenty of success and she will finally be able to compete an entire season clear of injuries.
“I’ve been dealing with injuries each of my three previous seasons,” said Powell, who sports a 3.9 grade point average. “So, I would just like to get through an entire season without any injuries. I mean, that’s really the main goal. But I’m looking forward to the season. Today was exciting and also a big relief.”
