Ireland seeks re-election to the Calvert board

Ireland, 55, retired from the Calvert sheriff’s office as a captain. He is now commissioner board president.

“I’m going to live in Calvert County for the rest of my life,” Ireland said, adding that he is running again to work to “make it a great place for my kids and grandkids.”

“Revenues are a challenge,” he said, adding that he and other current commissioners are “trying to get educated on data centers to see if it’s a fit.”

While Ireland confirmed data centers have been discussed by the board and staff in executive sessions, he added, “It’s not a done deal.”

In a second four-year term as a commissioner, Ireland said he will work to “make sure we have the right people in the right places.”

Challenges going forward include addressing affordable housing for seniors and the workforce — including law enforcement and teachers — protecting the waterways and rural land preservation.

Ireland expressed confidence the board has assembled a finance and budget team to ensure the wise expenditure of taxpayer money.

“We care about our debt ratio. We’re frugal,” Ireland said. “We had to kick a few things down the road.”

Ireland said the board did not relish raising of property tax rates in 2024.

“We pay taxes, too,” Ireland said, noting that the board focuses on Calvert’s public education and government services to residents.

“Calvert County citizens have great services — parks, convenience centers,” he added.

Other Republicans in the commissioners’ at-large race are incumbent Earl F. “Buddy” Hance plus newcomers Barbara Warner, Patti Stueckler and Jason Scaggs.

Early voting is June 11-18 with primary election day June 23.
