Every manager has been there. You’re looking to hire someone, and you have an excellent candidate. He talks a really good game — and he’s even done the job before.
Before you make a final decision, you call a few references.
“He will always put his own interests and gratifying his own ego above everything else.”
Hmm. That doesn’t sound so good — and they worked together closely for a couple of years.
“His behavior has become increasingly erratic and unnerving.”
Hmm. and that from another one of his closest coworkers.
What about the person he worked most closely with, his second in command? Nope. He doesn’t think your applicant should get another shot.
Maybe you’re just happening to get his enemies on the phone. I bet his family has more positive things to say.
“Honest work was never demanded of him, and no matter how badly he failed, he was rewarded.”
That doesn’t sound so good. Maybe his niece just didn’t know him so well.
You dig deeper and find his sister, who happens to be a retired judge. “You can’t trust him.”
No responsible manager would look past all these red flags and hire the candidate.
