Huntingtown High School senior Cole Roschel signs his National Letter of Intent on Feb. 7 to attend Thomas Jefferson University where he will play baseball for the next four seasons.
The latest signing period for high school students seeking to solidify their next four years of academics and athletics at the college of their choice commenced last week with a dozen athletes from several Southern Maryland Athletic Conference schools taking part.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Huntingtown High School, seniors Faith Shockley (St. Mary’s College of Maryland), Roger Jones Jr. (Air Force Academy), Aidan Moses (Shippensburg University), Lucia Bellafiore (College of Charleston), Cole Roschel (Thomas Jefferson University) and Greg Proctor (York College) all signed their National Letters of Intent during a busy, enthusiastic ceremony inside the school gymnasium.
Shockley, who is headed to St. Mary’s College of Maryland for volleyball where she will join fellow Hurricanes’ senior Kaleigh Wiseman as well as fellow SMAC players Elizabeth “E.A.” Childs and Gracie Zartman, both of Leonardtown, among several former SMAC players already on the Seahawks’ roster, was eager to take part in last week’s signing day.
“I wanted to play somewhere close to home and St. Mary’s College is a good school and some of my club teammates are heading there in the fall,” Shockley said. “I’m really looking forward to playing the next four years there. But part of it was knowing that I will already be familiar with so many of the girls on the team.”
Jones, who also currently plays boys’ basketball for the school, is headed to the Air Force Academy for football, Moses is heading to Shippensburg for men’s soccer, Cole Roschel is going to Thomas Jefferson for baseball after concluding his Hurricanes’ playing days on the diamond this spring, Proctor is heading to York College for men’s soccer and Bellafiore is going to the College of Charleston for Equestrian events.
That same afternoon at nearby Northern High, seniors Tyler Brown and Gabby Cope both signed their National Letters of Intent to pursue their favorite sports for the next four years. Brown is heading to Dayton University for football, while Cope is going to Penn State University for trackand field. Coincidentally, both Brown and Cope are members of the Patriots’ indoor track team which will be competing in the 3A State finals on Wednesday.
That morning at Patuxent, seniors Billy Clay (Chesapeake College), Will Hagan (Chesapeake College), Regan Tharaldson (Roanoke College) and Robbie Weir (Lock Haven) all signed their letters. Both Clay and Hagan are headed to Chesapeake College for baseball, Tharaldson is going to Roanoke for women’s lacrosse and Weir is heading to Lock Haven for football.
