Fans familiar with Broadway plays will certainly recognize the bevy of songs performed in The Newtowne Players’ upcoming presentation of “A Night On Broadway: Broadway Backwards” as the local production gives actors, young and old, and even its director, a chance to play a hint of role reversal.
Produced by Aaron Meisinger and directed by Kenny Faison, “A Night On Broaway” certainly lives up to its title in various ways.
Faison, for example, is accustomed to being on stage for Newtowne plays but over the next two weekends he actually makes his directorial debut. Veteran actor Jonathan Berry, who directed “Mousetrap,” returns to the stage for numerous musical numbers while youthful Kendall Cross, a Leonardtown High School junior, takes center stage in her debut in a lead role.
“Right from the beginning, this cast has been amazing,” Faison said. “Being this is my first show ever as a director, I could not have asked for any more from this cast. This is a fun show in which to debut and a fun show for the audience. There are so many memorable songs from Broadway musicals that get brought to life, but with a twist.”
As is the case with his fellow male cast members, Barry spends the evening performing various songs usually designed for women, while Cross also enjoys a role reversal of sorts playing male leads who are designed to be older than their peers. At 16, of course, the Leonardtown junior is the youngest cast member for this show, her first since appearing in “Matilda” last season.
“I love everything about this show,” said Cross, who plays the flute in the Leonardown marching band. “My duet with Jonathan is so much fun. Right from the first rehearsal we just bonded well together in that number. I can’t wait to perform in front of an audience.”
“It’s cool because last year I directed Kenny in ‘Mousetrap’ and now I’m back on stage and he’s directing me in this show,” said Barry, who works full-time at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River. “He’s been great to work with. I was able to get a whole new perspective on the theater when I directed Mousetrap, so I know what it’s like for him.”
“A Night On Broadway: Broadway Backwards” is scheduled to continue this weekend, Jan. 29-Feb. 1, but inclement weather could impact run dates. Anyone planning to attend any of the shows should contact the Three Notch Theatre regarding any weather cancellations.
