In addition to host North Point, a quintet of Southern Maryland Athletic Conference boys basketball teams were on hand for a pair of games during the two-day James Chapman Memorial Tournament last weekend and most of them fared well.
Lackey (4-1), last year’s Southern Maryland Athletic Conference champions who later pushed eventual 2A state champion Largo to the limits in the region finals before falling, recorded a pair of convincing wins in the tournament and was crowned the champion of the James Chapman bracket on Saturday following the Chargers 69-35 triumph over Springbrook.
“I thought we played well both games,” said Lackey boys coach DeShaun Kelly, whose team will face Largo this Saturday at DuVal. “It’s always good to have some good competition over the break. We have a tough game against Largo when we get back right after the New Year then our conference schedule gets going and there are a lot of really good teams in SMAC again this year.”
Westlake (4-3), which forged a narrow 43-42 victory over Springbrook of Montgomery County on Friday afternoon, returned the following afternoon to upend Potomac 64-48. The Wolverines appeared to gain control of the contest in the second quarter and led 37-19 at the intermission before Potomac trimmed the gap to 43-29 heading to the fourth.
St. Charles (5-1) defeated Bladensburg 64-44 on Friday morning then upended Annapolis 59-50 on Saturday morning. Huntingtown (6-2), which edged Oxon Hill 45-44 on Friday, suffered a 68-67 to Graphics (N.Y.) on Saturday in arguably the two best games of the tournament.
Thomas Stone (3-2) rebounded from a 62-40 setback against Annapolis on Friday to edge Bladensburg 59-54 on Saturday afternoon.
While Lackey will return to action this Saturday afternoon against Largo in a rematch of last year’s region final won by the Lions, next week Thomas Stone will head to Potomac on Monday and then host Great Mills on Wednesday.
St. Charles will be idle until it faces Lackey on Jan. 9 and then faces Huntingtown five days later on Jan. 14, while Westlake will face Patuxent on Jan. 9.
