The 2018 high school cross country season kicked off Saturday for many Southern Maryland Athletic Conference schools as they competed in the Seahawk Invitational at South River High School in Anne Arundel County.
Four SMAC boys runners placed in the top 20 individually. Calvert’s Justin Diehl took fourth in 15 minutes 53.81 seconds as the Cavaliers finished best for conference boys teams at the event, placing sixth with 216 points. Isaiah Willett added a 16th-place finish (16:29.99).
Chopticon’s Zachary Wedding took 12th (16:17.07) as the Braves ended up 14th overall as a team with 341 points.
Huntingtown’s Conor McGirr was 19th (16:31.81) as the Hurricanes took 18th as a team with 496 points.
Leonardtown (19th place, 501 points), La Plata (24th, 620), Northern (26th, 738) and Patuxent (30th, 885) all competed in the event.
Severna Park had three runners in the top 10, including champion Garrison Clark who won in 15:17.45, and claimed the team title with 40 points.
On the girls side, Leonardtown’s Nelle Ray was the champion in a time of 18:40.38, which was nearly 13 seconds ahead of River Hill’s Faith Meininger.
Ray was one of four SMAC girls in the top 10 and six in the top 20.
Huntingtown’s Oakley Olson was behind Meininger in third (18:54.26). Northern’s Claudia Dolan took sixth (19:14.25) and Calvert’s Sydney Friedel finished ninth (19:29.00).
Dolan’s teammate Hannah Mack placed 15th (19:49.24) and Huntingtown’s Jane Gorman was 20th (20:14.44).
Walt Whitman of Montgomery County was the team champion with 111 points, defeating Severna Park by three points. Northern was third with 130 and Huntingtown was right behind the Patriots in fourth at 132.
Leonardtown placed ninth with 258 points, while Calvert was 11th (280) and Chopticon 19th (475).
The SMAC cross country season kicks off today with Northern taking on Thomas Stone, Westlake and host McDonough, Lackey facing Patuxent and host La Plata and Calvert taking on Leonardtown and host Great Mills.
