All 14 Southern Maryland Athletic Conference football teams accepted the chance to participate in the expanded postseason which commenced last weekend and nine of them, three of which had first round byes, will play this weekend as they search for an eventual berth in their respective state championship games early next month.
Calvert County squads Calvert High (8-1), Huntingtown (7-2) and Patuxent (6-3) all earned first round byes as the top seed in their respective region bracket, but six other SMAC squads punched their ticket to the next round this weekend by earning victories on the gridiron.
Three games last weekend pitted two SMAC teams against one another, while more games this weekend will feature a pair of SMAC teams squaring off.
Defending 4A/3A state champion North Point (3-7) pulled away from Arundel, last year’s 3A state champion, in the second half en route to a 27-12 victory and the Eagles, who have yet to taste defeat on the field this fall, will head to Great Mills, which edged Leonardtown 33-21 last Friday night in another 4A/3A East region opener.
North Point had to forfeit seven of its regular season games because the team was playing an ineligible player.
Calvert, which had a first round bye last week, will host Lackey in a 2A/1A East Region second round contest after the Chargers made quick work of Kent Island last Friday, 33-5.
Huntingtown, which also had a bye, will host McDonough, a gritty 22-21 winner at Northeast of Anne Arundel county, while Patuxent will host Washington, a 22-8 winner over Snow Hill.
Westlake, which trounced La Plata 62-8 last week in a 2A South Region opener, will host Northern, a handy 56-13 winner over Thomas Stone last week.
St. Charles, which thumped Chesapeake of Anne Arundel County 41-0 last week, will head back to Anne Arundel this week to face South River (10-0), one of the few remaining undefeated teams in a 3A South Region contest on Friday.
